该片由迈克尔·格兰达吉（Michael Grandage）导演，描写了美国大作家托马斯·沃尔夫与他的图书编辑麦克斯·珀金斯之间的友谊。
托马斯·沃尔夫（Thomas Wolfe）是美国20世纪30年代的著名作家，也是上世纪最伟大作家之一，代表作有《天使，望故乡》（Look Homeward,Angel，1929）《时间与河流》（Of Time And River，1935）等。麦克斯·珀金斯（Max Perkins）则是著名的文学编辑，曾一手发掘过菲茨杰拉德（F. Scott Fitzgerald）、海明威（Ernest Hemingway）。他们两人的友谊无形之中改变了他们不同的个性，也改变了他们不同的人生轨迹。
《天才》由约翰·洛根（John Logan）根据A.
