故事的主人公是一个魔术师，他经常在现场邀请嘉宾与他一起表演看起来很恐怖的魔术，像是把剑穿过嘉宾的身体等等。不过更恐怖的还在后头，那些参与过这种表演的嘉宾，后来都一一死去，死法就跟魔术师曾经表演的一模一样……。Morse and Lewis investigate the death of Laura Poindexter, an American tourist who is part of an exclusive tour group visiting Oxford. Missing from her personal effects is her jewelry, including the Wolvercote Tongue which she was going to donate to the Ashmolean Museum. The pathologist determines that she died of natural causes, but Morse feels there's something not quite righ...。
