But the life of a father and his young son threatens to disintegrate when the father's device begins to fail. Desperate to avoid facing his own traumatic reality, the man must venture outside to find a replacement, into a city where violence and danger lurk beneath a skim of beautiful illusion.。长期守候在本庄医院第一线的内科医生栗原一止（樱井翔 饰），即将和妻子榛名（宫崎葵 饰）迎接新生命的到来，但是工作和家庭间的矛盾也让他的内心升起隐隐的忧虑。与此同时，一止的医科大同学近藤辰也（藤原龙也 饰）作为血液科精英来到本庄医院。一止兴奋非常的同时，却发现曾经善良敬业的近藤变得冷漠无情。另一方面，常年驻守医院的恩师贯田诚太郎（柄本明 饰）突然病倒，很快便被诊断患有晚期淋巴癌。曾经为了医患牺牲家庭的贯田医生，总算迎来了和夫人千代（市毛良枝 饰）相守的短暂而珍贵的时光。医疗改革让病患们得到无微不至的关怀，但作为人而存在的医生则为此付出了更多、更多……
本片根据夏川草芥的同名原作改编。。
